Writing to Write - Early Christmas!

Today I voluntarily turned on Christmas music.

No, not because the US is finally past Labor Day, or some silly time-related rule like that.

...honestly, I don't have rules about when it's okay to listen to Christmas music. I listen to what appeals to me, when it appeals to me (unless I'm in an office shared with co-workers) - it's one of the best parts of adulthood!

But I've been tasked with writing the Christmas play for a local international preschool/kindergarten, and today I finally started making real headway.

I know it is important to include suitable songs, and was seeking inspiration for a carol to break up two scenes. So I turned to all the Christmas albums I've saved to my computer. I didn't keep it on for long.

Story of my life - in theatre, music, or retail, I'm always a season ahead.

  1. The lack of Christmas music in China means I might actually be able to tolerate it in the house because I won't get sick of it like I do in the States.

  2. I have Christmas music on the playlist I listen to all the time. I always enjoy it when one of them pops up.

Like Brett, I get sick of it at Christmas time because it's all I hear. I generally don't voluntarily listen to it except for Christmas morning but I love the music itself. I decided, screw it, I'm mixing them in on my playlist and I find I truly enjoy them more when they pop up all year than when I hear them over and over around Christmas.

    1. That's a good idea! When I lived alone, I would pop in a Christmas CD whenever I felt like it.

  3. There's a distinct advantage to being in a creative field: you're always looking ahead. Although it's kind of funny to me that most creative people I know are terrible procrastinators.

    1. Exactly! We're a full season ahead, so there's "all the time in the world!"

Ironically, the guy who runs the school I'm doing this play for is the worst procrastinator I've ever met. Last year they hadn't confirmed the venue until 2 days prior!

  4. Christmas music is always on my Ipod. Some of my favorite songs are usually sang at Christmas. My favorite of all time is Silent Night!! Oh how I long for those Silent nights!!

    1. Yesterday I was singing "It's a Marshmallow World" while cleaning the house. I don't even know all the words, but it was in my mom's giant Christmas songbook as I grew up, so I'm a familiar with it.

  5. They've already started playing Christmas music in some places here, so I'm sick of it, but I think Brett's right. I bet if you never hear it, suddenly it's much more tolerable.

    1. Christmas songs are often a bit amusing here - funny twists they put in the tune, things like that - but the bigger eye-roll for me is the decor that stays up for months. Santa's face lingers on the doors to restaurants until summer vacation.

I enjoy a good debate. Feel free to shake things up. Tell me I'm wrong. Ask me why I have such a weird opinion. ...or, just laugh and tell how this relates to you and your life.
