Working Again - Sort Of

As of tomorrow, I'm a working girl again.

I had an unexpected summer off, and it was fun, but I'm looking forward to getting back to work. This is a temporary job, though. Probably just two weeks, which is fine. It's a paycheck. Just in time too.

The job search is terrible. I had a couple of contacts when I first moved, and both of them turned out not to have any positions "at this time" but both recommended I set up an account on Career Builder. Since then I have been on Career Builder daily, in addition to calling in response to ads I see in the paper, and stopping personally at local businesses. I have a reasonably wide search field, too, since of course I'd love to live closer to my dear Brett.

No dice. I've had a few interviews, and since I'm not in a destitute position, have had the freedom to say "no thank you." Actually, I've turned down a couple of options the Temp agency had for me, because I will not make an hour-long commute for the tuppence they offered!

So I'm using my discretion. This job is in an office closer than the previous offers were, doing a specific task for a specific office that is changing a procedure and needs to update old files. Not exciting, but something I know I can do, and in a decent environment.

This is just a post to keep you updated, that I'm here, but haven't anything exciting to say at the moment. I'll work on it, I promise.

  1. Ugh. Job searches are brutal everywhere these days - my hubby has been looking and finally found something after months, but it doesn't start until October.

Congrats on the temp job, though! Maybe this will lead to another position with the company - networking seems to be WAY more useful in this economic climate than the regular old application-interview process.

    1. No kidding! The woman from the temp agency suggested that, when asked what my greatest weakness is, I should talk about the fact that I have no network out here.

I interview well, if I get an interview, but I've never been good at "selling myself".

  2. I so don't envy you the job hunt, I did it in January at age 57 and it was terrifying. I had the qualifications, the job openings just aren't there. Makes one very appreciative/tolerant of what they do find, though frankly the pay should be much better. I'm glad you found something for an income booster shot, that's a start, and it will come, but the waiting and working at it can be torturous I know.

    1. For me it's not as terrifying because at least I have a roof over my head and food on the table while I hung, thanks to my parents. It's just frustrating.

  3. Nothing interesting to say? How about the Nutella Vs Peanut butter experiments you were conducting? :)

Good to see you're still alive

    1. You're right. My bad.

Although the experiments slowed down. My mom loves Nutella, and I'm down near the bottom of the jar already.

  4. Looking for a job is like getting repeatedly poked in the eye by life. At least you are remaining upbeat about it.

    1. "poked in the eye by life" - I love that description.

As sappy as it sounds, I wouldn't be so upbeat if Brett weren't around. I'd have started getting all grumpy and frustrated months ago: >ahem< year old single female, living in her parents' basement, unemployed? Sounds pathetic. At least I have one thing going for me!

  5. Good to hear that you've found something :) I've had two interviews so far and was offered jobs after each - but they turned out to have issues so I let them go. Forward march!

    1. I had a few dud interviews, too. I rebelled against the idea of signing on with a temp agency, but they've really come through.

  6. I'm thankful you finally found something. I know how frustrating it can be when the prospects just aren't there. This will be the start and it will only move up from here.

    1. Pretty soon we'll both have steady paychecks, and we can gas-up our cars and see each other again!

  7. Ugh, job hunting is never fun. Glad to hear you found something, even if it's temporary. Who knows? It could lead to a new contact.

    1. Could be. It was fun to be in an office setting again, but I wouldn't want to do this job long-term. Boring.

  8. Yay for gainful employment!! Even temporarily. And it IS all about the networking and who you know. So meeting new people in an office setting might not be a bad thing. I am currently casting the net, but there are NO fish out there right now. So frustrating. I mean, I have an advanced degree (that I am still paying ridiculous loans on!) and can't find a decent job. So very frustrating. I feel your pain, girl. Keep your head up. This is a step in the right direction at least.

    1. I'm just so bad at networking. And I'm in "HR Alley"... two offices with doors in a building full of cubicles. Three people actually popped into my office today, but ... I don't know. I'm there to do a job, and intend to excel at that. I don't really see anyone unless they come to me, which is usually looking for someone else.

Blah. But it's one week. One paid week.

I enjoy a good debate. Feel free to shake things up. Tell me I'm wrong. Ask me why I have such a weird opinion. ...or, just laugh and tell how this relates to you and your life.
