Random Wednesday

Wednesday Medley with Terri D.
Today seems to hold quite a random mix of questions! Let's see if I can weave it into anything...

I appreciate someone just telling me what to write today. Between writing projects and now having my Mandarin class this afternoon (Thursday), I just can't think of anything to blog! So this keeps me going. Thanks, Terri!

1. This week is County Fair Week in my old stomping grounds.  The Fairfield County (Ohio) Fair holds fond memories for me, especially of the marching band show on the race track, in front of the grandstand, and of 4-H sewing projects.  Do you have a memory to share of a county or state fair?
We moved overseas when I was 10, so I don't remember Iowa county fairs, if we ever went. I do remember parades for every holiday, though. Our house was on the main street in town, so we didn't have to go anywhere or reserve spots near the action. Just take our lawn chairs down to the sidewalk and rake in buckets of candy!

2. If animals could talk, which would be the rudest?
Hyenas. They are laughing at everybody!

3. What mythical creature would improve the world most if it existed?
I think Dragons would be most useful. Think about transportation, forest fire-fighting, and the non-flying kind could be useful in farming or industry.

4. What is something that everyone looks stupid doing?
Reading a map while out in a new city. Even staring at your phone's GPS, everyone is so focused, but their eyes are so clearly lost. Because if you're looking at a map, you don't know where you are. You can look great and smart as soon as you figure it out, but the only good way to look at a map is sitting in a restaurant out of the public pathways!

5. Is intelligence or wisdom more useful?
From what I'm reading, a lot of people seem to be equating "street smarts" with wisdom, and I disagree. However, I do agree that that is more useful than traditional wisdom. KNOWING THINGS is useful in a day-to-day world. If you have wisdom but ZERO intelligence, how would you navigate the day to and from the market, cooking your meals? You NEED a certain amount of intelligence. Not discounting wisdom, of course it is needed for the complex decisions of life, but you'd be dead before you ever got to a complex decision if all you ever had was wisdom.

6. Tell us something random about the rest of your week!
Random. I'm writing this in the interim between doing my daily writing and preparing for my afternoon Mandarin class. I better wrap this up so I can review the lesson!

Well, I didn't weave it into a narrative or anything. What do you think? Everyone seems to be praising Unicorns, but what can they actually DO besides look pretty?

  1. Plus, according to Eileen Wilks in her World of the Lupi series (another good one), dragons absorb magic, keeping technology stable. :-)
MUCH more useful than mere prodding with a horn...

    1. I love that. I have so much reading to do!

I do think that, living in the far east, I might have dragons on the brain more than other mythical creatures. My personal favorite mythical creature is the phoenix, but I don't see how that would "improve the world".

  2. Red,

Thanks for sharing your answers to Terri's questions. I might try to do this next week if I don't forget. I always enjoyed Joyce's Wednesday Hodgepodge A&A but she recently retired her weekly segment. #5 is interesting. Wisdom comes from things that you learn first hand or through observation, intelligence is the ability to acquire and apply what one learns. In essence wisdom and intelligence is very much the same. The main difference being that wisdom requires experience which comes with time. :) Thanks for dropping by for a visit.

    1. Interesting. I don't think of wisdom coming from learning. I guess, the experience of life kind of learning, true. I think of wisdom as a finer point of intelligence, like knowing what to do with what you know. You know the saying:
Intelligence recognizes that tomatoes are a fruit.
Wisdom understands not to put them in a fruit salad.

(Partly, I was playing devil's advocate with my answer. I read four other posts on this link, and they all flatly said wisdom. They also all flatly said "unicorn" which I think is beautiful but "improve the world"?)

  3. This was fun to read. I had to laugh at #5. True, we need intelligence and wisdom. I always think of wisdom not in street smarts, but more in I Kings, where Solomon asks for wisdom, a discerning heart and mind. That's so useful in navigating God's world and our relationships. :-)

    1. I thought of that. If Solomon asked for Wisdom, surely that must be enough? But, he had servants to handle day-to-day requirements like shopping and cooking, so it's not like needed to know how to follow a recipe or the difference between using soy sauce and hoi sin sauce. It's a very fine line.

  4. But I wonder if dragons did exist. The stories came about because people found dinosaur bones and fossils and tried to extrapolate what creature had made them. But as this was back when people were more or less uneducated (hundreds of years ago), they weren't making good guesses as to how these critters looked.

My theory (unsupported by facts) is that dragons were actually dinosaurs mislabeled.

    1. Dragons are all around me here in Vietnam. Even more than in China, which often couples a dragon and a phoenix in symbology. Fun Fact: Chinese dragons don't fly. No wings.

  5. Red, I'm always dazzled when someone is learning Mandarin! I don't think I have the bandwidth for such an endeavor at this time!

    1. It's just a skype call. Actually, her internet is more often the problem, and sometimes we have to restart a couple times, but it's worth it, I think.

  6. These were interesting questions and your answers were great. I am glad I have the intelligence to know that I also have some wisdom. Enjoy your week!

I enjoy a good debate. Feel free to shake things up. Tell me I'm wrong. Ask me why I have such a weird opinion. ...or, just laugh and tell how this relates to you and your life.
