O is for Oceans

I have been in three of our world’s four oceans. It KILLS me! I want that fourth SO BAD! But the Arctic Ocean. How would I do that? I think I need a trip to Scandinavia.

I mean, the Indian Ocean, obviously. We lived in Sri Lanka for years. (see posts for C and E) I love swimming in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

I lived on the East Coast for 12 years. Walks in the surf…almost daily. An occasional evening swim on hot days. The Atlantic is a dear friend to me now. (see post for D) Of course, I’ve been in other parts of the Atlantic – actually a lot of places from Maine to the Keys.

Although I’m more familiar with the Atlantic, I’ve been in the Pacific on both sides, from living in Taiwan, and then on a college trip that offered me a day to wade in the surf of Oregon.

I imagine that to actually get INTO the Arctic Ocean, I may need a wet suit. Or maybe I’ll just be the crazy American tourist doing my own spontaneous Polar Bear Plunge. That could work. But where???
The Moral of the Story: It's important to have dreams.

  1. Not sure where, but the Polar Bear Plunge sounds like the trick.

  2. I always thought there were 5 oceans? And when I went to check, I found one I had never heard of...the Southern Ocean. I think that used to be the Antarctic Ocean, but maybe it had to go into witness protection.

So you have two icy ones to go (unless you've already been there, which, given how many places you've been, maybe?!)

    1. They added one? In 2000? What the heck? (glad you told me) As a former Geography minor, I will continue forward with just the four recognized as individual oceans, divided by landmasses.

I expect the so-called "Southern Ocean" - delineated by a parallel of latitude, like anyone knows where they are - is like Pluto and will be unrecognized again in a few years!

  3. Oh my gosh, a polar bear plunge in the arctic ocean?? You're fearless. Just thinking about that makes me chilly. I visit the Pacific here in Oregon, whenever we can manage it. Bandon-By-The-Sea has been my favorite, by far. Tidal pools with bright orange starfish is hard to beat.

    1. As a former east-coast dweller, I actually did the Polar Bear Plunge 10 times, always into water between 36 - 43 degrees Fahrenheit.
However, the northern west coast gets colder than the east, because you guys have all that polar water flowing down, so that would be an even colder Plunge, I'm sure!

  4. What the heck are the pirates talking about when they mention the Seven Seas?

    1. I always tried to figure that out, but there's a lot more than seven. Mediterranean, Black, Caspian, Baltic, Aegean, South China, Red...

I enjoy a good debate. Feel free to shake things up. Tell me I'm wrong. Ask me why I have such a weird opinion. ...or, just laugh and tell how this relates to you and your life.
