With no news to share, I thought I'd select a few random pictures from the past week to share with you.
I believe I've mentioned that we live about a 10-minute walk from the beach. Resort area. Danang is split lengthwise by a river and much of the official business and major shopping (to avoid tourist pricing) is west of the river. Because of that, there are several bridges, the most notable of which is the Dragon Bridge. Let me show you.

The dragon's body. It goes over the hump of the bridge. |
Also this past week, we had the Summer Solstice. There's not a huge lengthening or shortening of days when you live at 16*N, but I took this picture of my shadow around noon on the 21st.
...I was facing south. SOUTH! The sun is north of me for the next couple months! I'm still in a bit of freak-out mode about that. I am currently south of the sun! WHAT!!?!?
Does anyone else get excited by geography? Sometimes it's lonely in my brain.
As an alternative to looking at my feet, I took this picture looking up into the branches of a tropical tree I don't know. These trees look a bit like a bunch of ferns growing out of a tall trunk. I like them. Not all have red flowers, but isn't it pretty?
If anyone has a guess what kind of tree this is, let me know! |
How was your week? Big plans for this week?
Geography is always exciting, but even more so if you live in a city with a bona fide fire-breathing dragon.
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited to see it ... maybe after the 4th.
Deletethat bridge is amazing! Does it really breathe fire? I must google it!
ReplyDeleteDo google it. I've been advised not to stand to close to the mouth (under it) because after the fire, it spews water. Probably a good precaution.
DeleteBusy is good. I hope your life stuff went well.
ReplyDeleteThe suitcases we shipped from Beijing have arrived, but we have to wait for them to clear customs. We had to go to the office to say "yes, that's ours." And we've been in contact with Beijing some more about trying to get our refund on our apartment there. That's not over yet, but maybe soon?
DeleteWow, what a great bridge! So cool that it actually breathes fire. I can't say I share your enthusiasm for geography-I have no sense of direction. I watched an interesting TED Talk recently where a linguist talked about a tribe of people that have no words for left and right, just words for the points on the compass. When asked to arrange a series of photos from a person's life in chronological order, instead of arranging them left to right as we do (due to the direction we read) the direction they arranged them in changed depending on where they were facing. For example, if they faced North, they arranged time from left to right, if they faced East they arranged time as coming towards their body. Their whole perception of timelines was based on the location of the sun. I found it really interesting! That tree does look really pretty, no idea what it is, though.
ReplyDeleteThat is fascinating! I wonder where that tribe of people lived. It's funny how things that are so ingrained in us as fact or true are simply a matter of perspective and culture.
DeleteMy favorite author, Douglas Adams, created a world where people never looked at the night sky. There were no stars and no moon to see, so they had no reason to look up!
I want to see the dragon bridge breathing fire! There are so many interesting little things in the world that we never hear about - thank goodness for bloggers sharing these little snippets :)
ReplyDeleteRight? Well I confirmed with a friend that we will go to see it on the 7th. I should have pictures up shortly thereafter!
DeleteWhat an amazing bridge.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see it in action. Maybe I'll get a video.
